Preventing Cross-Contamination with Automated Clean Room Access Control
Overview
Maintaining strict contamination controls is essential in pharmaceutical manufacturing and research environments. A global pharmaceutical organization and its security integration partner needed a way to automatically enforce clean room access policies based on employee movement throughout the facility.
Rather than relying on manual processes or employee compliance alone, the organization partnered with Octeum to develop a custom access control solution that prevents personnel from entering designated clean rooms after visiting contaminated or “dirty” areas. The result was an automated workflow that strengthened compliance, reduced administrative effort, and helped protect critical production and research environments.
The Challenge
Clean room environments demand rigorous access controls to minimize the risk of contamination. Employees who entered designated dirty rooms were required to complete decontamination procedures before returning to clean production spaces, but enforcing these policies manually was inefficient and prone to human error.
The organization needed an automated solution capable of:
- Restricting access to clean rooms after entry into designated dirty rooms.
- Supporting multiple levels of contamination restrictions across different facility areas.
- Automatically restoring access once the required restriction period had expired.
- Eliminating manual oversight while maintaining a complete audit trail of badge activity.
The solution needed to integrate directly with the existing Avigilon Access Control Manager (ACM) platform without disrupting daily operations.
Octeum’s Approach
Octeum worked closely with the customer and its security integration partner to understand facility workflows, contamination protocols, and access control requirements. Together, the teams identified how personnel moved between secure areas and defined three configurable levels of clean room access restrictions.
This planning phase ensured the solution aligned with operational procedures while remaining flexible enough to support future facility changes.
Octeum leveraged its proprietary development framework and deep Avigilon ACM expertise to integrate a custom Windows service directly with the access control platform. The service continuously monitors badge activity, processes access events in real time, and automatically enforces clean room access policies based on employee movement throughout the facility.
To simplify ongoing administration, Octeum developed a configurable application that allows security administrators to:
- Define clean and dirty room designations.
- Associate clean and dirty access roles.
- Configure restriction durations for individual areas or workflows.
- Automatically restore access once restriction periods expire.
- Maintain detailed logs of all badge activity and role changes for auditing purposes.
The solution eliminated the need for manual intervention while ensuring contamination protocols were consistently enforced.
The Solution
Octeum implemented an automated clean room access management solution that continuously evaluates badge activity within Avigilon ACM.
When an employee enters a designated dirty room, the application immediately removes the appropriate clean room access permissions and records the event with a timestamp. Access remains restricted according to configurable business rules before being automatically restored once the required waiting period has elapsed.
The solution also supports multiple badge behavior options to accommodate different operational policies. Organizations can configure restrictions to begin with the first qualifying badge event or extend the restriction period each time additional dirty room access occurs.
By automating these workflows, the organization eliminated manual tracking while ensuring contamination prevention policies were consistently applied.
Results
The custom application provided a reliable, automated method for enforcing clean room access policies across a highly regulated pharmaceutical environment.
Improved Compliance
Access restrictions are enforced automatically, helping ensure contamination control procedures are consistently followed.
Reduced Administrative Effort
Security personnel no longer need to manually track employee movement or adjust access permissions.
Greater Operational Reliability
Real-time processing and automated role restoration reduce the potential for human error while maintaining uninterrupted facility operations.
Configurable for Future Growth
Flexible business rules allow administrators to adapt clean room policies as operational requirements evolve.
