Faster upgrade execution, from 18 hours to just 11 hours

The Challenge

Managing enterprise-scale security systems across hundreds of global locations requires careful planning and flawless execution. Cisco needed to upgrade critical security infrastructure supporting approximately 300 offices worldwide without disrupting business operations or impacting security.

Previous upgrade events required approximately 18 hours to complete and involved significant coordination across multiple technical teams. The objective for this project was clear:

  • Reduce overall upgrade time
  • Minimize operational impact
  • Prevent monitoring noise and false alarms
  • Ensure uninterrupted security operations throughout the migration
  • Execute successfully across a complex global environment

With more than 1,000 access control panels, application servers, communication servers, remote desktop web servers, network video recorders, and client workstations involved, every hour of downtime carried operational risk.

Octeum’s Approach

Rather than simply repeating the previous upgrade process, Octeum evaluated lessons learned from earlier deployments and identified opportunities to improve every phase of execution.

Our team developed a detailed six-month implementation strategy focused on reducing risk while increasing efficiency.

Key improvements included:

Evaluate

  • Reviewed previous upgrade performance
  • Identified process bottlenecks
  • Optimized deployment strategy based on lessons learned

Monitor

  • Modified system monitoring to eliminate false-positive alarms during the upgrade
  • Maintained visibility into system health throughout execution
  • Closely tracked performance across all global locations

Manage

  • Upgraded 46 communication, application, and remote desktop web servers
  • Coordinated updates across approximately 300 global offices
  • Managed upgrades for more than 1,000 access control panels, network video recorders, and client applications
  • Shifted transaction priorities to reduce server impact during processing

The project required months of planning and close collaboration between Octeum engineers and multiple teams throughout Cisco’s corporate security organization to ensure every phase executed as planned.

Results

The planning and process improvements produced measurable results.

39% Faster Upgrade Execution

Through backend optimization, improved monitoring strategies, and refined deployment processes, Octeum reduced the total upgrade window from 18 hours to just 11 hours.

Project Outcomes

  • 39% reduction in upgrade duration
  • 46 servers successfully upgraded
  • 300 global offices supported
  • 1,000 access control panels updated
  • Minimal operational disruption
  • Reduced monitoring noise during deployment
  • Fastest enterprise security upgrade completed for the customer

Why It Matters

Large-scale security upgrades often require organizations to balance operational continuity with technology modernization.

By applying lessons learned, improving deployment methodology, and collaborating closely with Cisco’s security leadership, Octeum transformed what had traditionally been an 18-hour project into the customer’s fastest upgrade to date.

The result was more than a successful technology upgrade—it demonstrated how continuous improvement, careful planning, and experienced security professionals can significantly reduce risk while improving operational efficiency.
